About Legacy's Mission
Held on Friday, September 19, this exclusive evening of programming will unveil the first look at Legacy, a multimedia exhibition that weaves together photography, film, and written word to honor the long-standing businesses and the stories that shape Los Angeles – as well as a curation of local talented artists. The following day, Saturday, September 20, the exhibition will open to the public for all to experience.
The event also commemorates two major milestones in West Adams: the 25th anniversary of Mariscos Marias, a beloved family-owned restaurant that has been serving the West Adams community for over 4 decades through their food truck, and the 5th anniversary of Persona the Shop, a retail store whose presence helped birth Midcity Mercado as a grassroots community organization and platform.
Why This Gala Matters
Midcity Mercado was born in the parking lot between these two businesses and has since grown into a cultural engine for the community — hosting over 70 free events, 300+ vendors, youth internships, wellness workshops, art exhibitions, and live music performances. In partnership with the City of Los Angeles Council District 10, it also produces one of LA’s largest Día de los Muertos festivals, drawing more than 50,000 attendees over the past two years to West Adams for an immersive, 8-block celebration of life, memory, and culture.
For the past five years, Mercado has operated entirely as a volunteer-led effort — built from love, resilience, and deep community commitment. But to sustain and expand this work, we need funding: to pay living wages, to grow our programming, and to ensure this legacy continues for generations to come.
Becoming a nonprofit will allow Midcity Mercado to:
- Offer free vendor training, business licensing education, assistance, and mentorship
- Expand arts access and exhibitions for POC creatives
- Continue its Sonidos music series and Dia de los Muertos festival
- Provide paid internships and creative career pipelines for local youth
- Host healing workshops, “Know Your Rights” sessions, and community fundraisers
- Secure government & foundation grants to sustain programming
“Our goal is $100,000 to launch our first year of nonprofit programming — to build our vendor support footprint, continue preserving culture, and create sustainable opportunities for LA’s marginalized entrepreneurs and creatives.”
